In this series we’re looking at anything new in the Apps, GenAI innovations & Business Models of the best Digital Technology Companies.

Since Apps & GenAI innovations are really the frontend to a business model, we always have to look at both: the frontend (the App) and the backend (the business model & why certain innovations & updates have actually occurred).

Here’s what happened lately at Google.

1. Search Generative Experience (SGE)

SGE is the main game combining Search and GenAI. Earlier in 2023, Microsoft had a convincing presentation of ChatGPT which put Google under pressure. Shortly later, Bard (Google conversational AI) didn’t convince and sent the share price into a tailspin (they have done better throughout the rest of the year). Here the Bard interface through which SGE can be accessed for now.

2. Assistant with Bard

Given Bard’s conversational capabilities, what’s more natural than trying to combine it with the Google Assistant? Done! Well, let’s say as of late 2023, it is continuing the test phase and will be rolled out to users gradually (barring any mishaps). The first capabilities are to-do lists, finding things in your inbox (Gmail) and more — see image.

3. Integration of Apps with Bard

Bard can also be of help getting things done with the various Google Apps. In one demo, they retrieve information from an eMail and build an itinerary with Google Flights & Hotels as well as a packing list via SGE.

Another use case is the integration into their Workspace, incl Docs and other apps.

4. Visual Search

A different type of AI-model was integrated earlier in Google Lens — a way of starting search via images. Hold your camera on something to get the Search started (either via the Lens App or — if available in your location — via the respective button in the search field). In my own few tests, it has proven to be pretty powerful.

5. Google Cloud

Google has more than 80 AI-powered models usable within their various Cloud offerings. In addition they are looking at AI-optimising their infrastructure (i.e. more GPU capacity potentially at the cost of CPU capacity).

Google was feared to fall behind earlier in the year but we are likely to be closer to the starting line than to the finish line when it comes to AI. There’s a great deal of exciting things on the horizon & we’re very eager to see the things that are to come.

Hugely exciting!
